IS IT POSSIBLE TO ELIMINATE THE EXCESS SKIN AROUND THE EYES?
Yes, the eyelid surgery is a particularly effective procedure when it is performed in order to eliminate the excess skin above and beneath the eyes. It also helps the patients to look less tired and livelier. The eyelid surgery and facelift are often performed at the same time.
HOW EYELID SURGERY IS PERFORMED
An incision is made in the cutaneous folds of the upper eyelid as well as beneath the eyelashes in the lower eyelid. By means of these incisions, the excess skin, fat and muscle are eliminated. Then the skin is tighten and sewn once again into its place. In most cases, the scars are virtually invisible four or six weeks after having undergone the surgery.
There is a variant of this procedure for the lower eyelid that is called transconjunctival eyelid surgery, which is performed inside the conjunctiva in order to eliminate the fatty matter. In this procedure the skin or muscle is not removed and a recovery period of three days is needed.
It is important to mention that incisions are made by a surgical carbon dioxide laser which goes across a precious stone (diamond). By means of this technique, incisions are sharper and more precise; hence the patient’s recovery is less painful. Haemostasis, the stoppage of blood flow through blood vessels (veins), is achieved with laser coagulation, which takes place when the laser comes into contact with the skin. Therefore, neither eyelid surgery nor transconjunctival eyelid surgery result in significant bruises or swelling.
The surgery is performed with local anesthesia and patients are given a sedative, hence they do not feel aches or pains during the procedure. Besides, they can go home 4 or 5 hours after the surgery and carry out their normal activities like watching television.
People of all ages can undergo this surgery, for there are diverse factors like heredity and/or genetics that cause/s the development of eyelid sacs at a very young age. In a similar way, this surgery can be safely and precisely performed in third age patients, even if they have hypertension, diabetes or another disease related to the third age. Every patient is previously examined in order to determine its state of health and, therefore, know if it is candidate for a carbon dioxide laser blepharoplasty
