Breast Reduction

How is Breast Reduction Performed?

Women who have a large breast may experience a number of problems arising from their weight and size, such as back, neck and shoulder pain, and skin irritation. Breast reduction appears as a solution to these discomforts, as well as an effective aesthetic method to improve the appearance of breasts.

On the other hand, some young women undergo an excessive development of the breasts that is called pubertal gigantomastia and require a reduction of breasts.

Procedure:

The procedure lasts approximately 3 to 4 hours and can be performed on an outpatient basis or with a night of postoperative hospitalization.

It is performed under general anesthesia. There are several different techniques for breast reduction. The main difference between them lies in the extent and location of the incisions, which can range from a simple circular incision around the areola to a complex incision that includes, in addition to the previous one, a vertical wound to the inframammary fold and a horizontal incision through this (scar in the form of “anchor”). The choice of the surgical technique will depend on several factors, mainly the size of the breast and the degree of its fall.

Recovery:

The approximate recovery time to return to daily activities is between 10 and 14 days.

Within the restrictions during the recovery period are: do not load heavy objects, do not sunbathe for at least a month. A special brassiere should be used for a few weeks to ensure the best result. The patient can perform light exercise at approximately 4 weeks, and intense exercise between 6 and 8 weeks after surgery.

The scars that could eventually be left after these interventions are later corrected with minimal touch-ups or with the application of diode and neodymium lasers.

Results:

The Breast Reduction can reduce breasts to the desired size, relieving back pain, shoulder brace marks and other discomfort.
